Last night Brent, Chloe and myself were walking along Lygon Street in Melbourne toward a friend’s place, just across the street from where I work.

A group of five or six Australian girls were walking in the opposite direction to us, and as they passed our group, one of them commented loudly enough for everyone to hear, “you know, if I were Asian, I’d give way.” This was followed by a mocking chorus of “ching chong ching chong” amongst the entire group as they walked away.

I’m personally not cut about it, and Chloe (who is Korean) missed the entire thing, but Brent (who is Canadian) was absolutely furious. I’m not upset about it, but that isn’t because I condone such behavior. Rather, it is because it happens to me so frequently that it really isn’t a big deal to me any more. I don’t accept this behavior, but I’ve come to accept that I will be judged, mostly negatively, based on the colour of my skin.

I suppose it’s very unfortunate that such blatant racism still occurs, and this isn’t even close to the most offensive thing I’ve encountered. I’ve been asked if I understood simple English, midway through the conversation, by the service staff of EnergyAustralia. I’ve been turned down for jobs because of my last name. I’ve been shouted at, threatened, insulted, on more than one occasion physically assaulted, all on busy streets in broad daylight.

The reason I’m bringing it up now is just to say that yes, these things still happen, and more frequently than one might think. It’s just difficult to imagine how common these things are if one were not on the receiving end of the abuse.
